The hobby budget planner

A first kit is just the beginning.

Plan the supplies you need now and the purchases you expect to repeat. Use your own USD estimates.

All starting amounts are editable examples, not live prices. This is a personal spending model, not an earnings forecast. No account or external price feed is used.

How the calculation works

Upfront = first-kit purchases + initial shipping and sales tax. Additional monthly spending is materials + other expenses + monthly shipping and tax. Multiply that by the selected number of months and add the upfront basket.

Expected projects = months × completed projects per month. The average including upfront costs is the plan total divided by that project count. The recurring-only average divides recurring spending by the same count. At zero completed projects, spending still appears and both per-project averages are unavailable.

A worked example you can change

A $45 first basket, no initial shipping/tax estimate, and an additional $12 per month for 12 months produce a $189 plan. At two completed projects per month, that is 24 projects: $7.88 on average including the first basket, or $6.00 for the recurring portion. These are planning examples, not prices for a named kit.

Keep the assumptions honest

Count initial materials once. The monthly input should represent additional purchases, not the same supplies already included in the first kit. Irregular purchases are averaged; calculate separate periods when that approximation would hide an important difference. This model does not price your time, financing, resale value or business profit.

Amounts are handled in cents; per-project averages are rounded for display. The form calculates in this browser without submitting its inputs to a calculation backend. Following a kit’s planning link includes its total in the calculator URL and page request; it does not pass the full supply list. See our privacy details.
