Cotman or Sakura Koi? Compare Two 12-Color Travel Sets

Compare the Cotman Sketchers' Pocket Set and Sakura Koi 12-color Pocket Field Sketch Box by brush setup, contents and the rest of your basket.

At a glance

Choose around the brush and working setup you want to use: Cotman includes a travel brush; the Koi 12-color box includes a reservoir water brush. Both still need appropriate paper and a practical cleanup plan. This is a specification-based choice, not a paint-quality winner.

Start with the way you want to paint

Our editorial starting point is the water setup. Consider Cotman if you want to practice loading a conventional brush from a water container. Consider the Koi box if a reservoir brush is the specific feature you want to explore. A reservoir does not remove every need for rinse water, blotting or cleanup.

For painting at a desk, use a brush and palette you already own before paying for a second travel system. For painting away from home, plan the whole outing: a stable surface, suitable paper, carried water where needed, a way to protect damp work and somewhere to put used blotting material. Neither box is a complete card-making kit.

Read the package name, not only the color count

Winsor & Newton lists SKU 5012572005784 with 12 Cotman half pans and a travel brush, and notes that actual contents may vary. The company now calls it the Sketchers' Pocket Set; older listings may say Pocket Box. This comparison does not cover its Field Box, metallic sets or other 12-pan tins.

What the water brush changes

Royal Talens describes the Sakura Koi 12-half-pan box with a water brush, a sponge and a mixing area in the lid. The linked Michaels page identifies a US 12-color Pocket Field Sketch Box. Check the exact contents when ordering; a similarly named special-effects or larger studio set is a different purchase.

We have not compared water release, brush point, pan behavior, pigment strength or drying. Those are sensible things to investigate through a relevant demonstration or your own small trial. The included brush type alone does not establish which paint performs better.

Compare the whole delivered basket

Write down each current US delivered set price, then add only the supplies still missing: watercolor paper, a suitable brush if the included one does not meet your need, a mixing surface, water container and blotting material. Check whether the palette area is sufficient for the mixtures you want to make.

Treat a replacement brush, individual colors and paper as future costs to investigate, not automatic upgrades. Confirm refill shape and supply availability for the exact box before assuming that any other brand's half pan will fit. More colors do not solve an unsuitable paper choice.

Who should choose something else?

Skip both travel boxes if your current paint already lets you try the project. If you need documented pigment information or specific lightfastness ratings, investigate the exact colors and their current manufacturer charts before choosing either set; we have not established a matched archival comparison.

A small selection of separately chosen paints can be another route, but add the empty palette and brush to that basket. Our watercolor-card supply guide and editable kit let you compare the setup without treating either named set as required.
